This project started as an exercise in modelling and lighting, but transformed into a tribute to my pet scorpion, Tank. I’ve always been fascinated by the architecture and locomotion of arachnids, they tend to play an emblematic role in my work. I began building a toy-like scorpion armature, but upon further interrogation it felt appropriate to transform Tank into his namesake.
This allowed a personality and creative digital container for my little 8-legged friend. Technically this process allowed me to rig Inverse Kinematic Continuous Track treads in 3D. I played with lighting and used caustics to present a plasticky wind-up toy that would feel comfortable living on a shelf or desk. I love the visual and tactile distinction between the colourful plastic chassis with the intricate metal armature/motor.
